What to Expect from Your Virtual Psychiatry Appointment

Your Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know you. Brittany will review your symptoms, mental health history, medical history, current medications, and treatment goals. Together, you’ll discuss an individualized plan for moving forward.

Medication Management

When clinically appropriate, medication may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. Brittany will work collaboratively with you to select treatment options, monitor your response, and make adjustments as needed.

Ongoing, Convenient Telehealth Appointments

Appointments take place through a secure virtual platform. You must be physically located in Florida at the time of your Florida telehealth appointment.

The Holistic Approach:
Integrating Lifestyle Changes

While ketamine treatment is effective in the short-term, a more holistic approach improves its long-term usefulness. A combination of factors, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, mindfulness practice, and treatment, can contribute to long-term mental health and well-being.

Call to schedule

Our team is available to answer any questions you may have and determine whether Ketamine Treatment is the right choice for you, taking into account your psychiatric history and medical criteria. If you’re interested in exploring the potential benefits of Ketamine Treatment, following this assessment, you can schedule your intake appointment. Established patients can easily arrange a 60-minute follow-up appointment.

Intake Appointment

Your intake appointment will take 60-90 minutes. This will include a full psychiatric history, medical history, and review of current medications. We also discuss goals and expectations for ketamine treatment. We will discuss your specific treatment protocol and then schedule your 6 ketamine sessions.

Start your Treatment

Our ketamine treatment protocol is determined by an evidenced-based model. Patients will complete a series of 3 ketamine treatments over 2 weeks, and then another set of 3 ketamine treatments over 2 weeks, for a total of 6 ketamine treatments. Each treatment session lasts about 90 minutes. If possible, it is recommended patients have a therapy integration session weekly with their therapist during ketamine treatments.

What’s next?

Ketamine is a short, intensive form of treatment. Some patient’s symptoms will remain in remission after 6 sessions, while others may find individual ketamine booster sessions beneficial every 1-3 months.

This may include stimulant medications commonly used to treat ADHD, such as Adderall and Vyvanse, as well as benzodiazepines used for certain anxiety disorders.  All medication recommendations are based on a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, individual treatment needs, and ongoing monitoring. Controlled substances are prescribed only when clinically indicated and in accordance with applicable federal and Florida regulations. Coverage varies by insurance plan, so we encourage you to contact our office to verify your benefits and confirm that your specific plan is accepted.  We also offer private-pay options for patients who prefer not to use insurance.

What should I expect during my first virtual psychiatry appointment?

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know you and understand your concerns.  During your comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, Brittany will review your current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, previous treatments, medications, lifestyle factors, and personal goals.  Together, you’ll discuss a personalized treatment plan, which may include medication management, lifestyle recommendations, and collaboration with your therapist or other healthcare providers.  All you’ll need is a reliable internet connection and a private, comfortable location for your appointment.

How is a psychiatric nurse practitioner different from a psychiatrist?

Both psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) and psychiatrists are qualified healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, including prescribing psychiatric medications.  The primary difference is their educational background and training. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who complete medical school and specialized residency training in psychiatry. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses who complete graduate-level education and specialized clinical training in psychiatric mental healthcare.  Both provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health conditions, develop individualized treatment plans, and manage psychiatric medications, including controlled substances when clinically appropriate and legally permitted.

At Wellness Psychiatry, our board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners provide the same core psychiatric evaluation and medication management services patients commonly seek from a psychiatrist. Our approach emphasizes personalized, collaborative care that considers the whole person, including mental health, physical health, nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle.

what our clients say

I was extremely apprehensive on my first visit because I was in a very bad mental state. Amanda was very thorough, very friendly, and made me feel very comfortable from the very beginning. As I recovered I looked forward to our visits but in the end we mutually decided that it was time for me to leave the nest and fly away. If I ever need her I can always call on her. There was something about the layout of the office, the furnishings, and the calming energy that always put me at ease. My first encounter with psychiatric counseling was definitely a positive experience and something that I'll cherish.
Charles
This practice has not only helped my mental health, but I have been treated in a way that is caring and thoughtful. I feel like I'm more than just the 10:30 client - there's a vested interest in my well being. Amanda Farrell is who I've been working with for a few years now and I highly recommend her! I also feel confident that anyone in the practice is trustworthy and reliable. Again, highly recommended!
Melissa
Amanda is an absolute RARE find. My husband even agreed that she does….actually….. care about me and my health. I’m 50 and this might be the first time in my life that I’ve felt that my doctor/therapist really wants me to be happy and successful in life. Starting therapy when I was in my 20’s so there is a long list of docs/therapist that I’ve seen over the years. Highly recommend — especially if you’ve started feeling like you’re just another patient in the queue.
Susannah
This is the best psychiatry practice I have been to. Everyone I have worked with has been empathetic and understanding. The office feels very warm and I feel very taken care of. I always know when I call or email, Riley will be super responsive to my needs. Highly recommend!
Ellen
Amanda has been incredibly helpful. I'm much happier and more productive.
