What is Ketamine?
Historically ketamine has been used for anesthesia. It is considered a dissociative anesthetic as patients often experience a separation of their ego-mind from their body-reality. Since 2000 ketamine has demonstrated antidepressant effects, at subanesthetic doses, as off-label use. Many patients find that ketamine provides a rapid, and sometimes immediate relief of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. In addition, ketamine is an evidence-informed treatment for Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, OCD and Bipolar Depression.
Less than 50% of patients respond to traditional psychiatric medications. For those who do not respond to traditional psychiatric medications, studies have supported that ketamine offers quick, significant improvement in symptoms. As with all treatment modalities, ketamine is not a magic bullet. The long-term efficacy of ketamine works congruently with the patient's focus on lifestyle modifications and therapy as needed.
